Il 2018 si è aperto con una dirompente novità, la Legge 3 dell’11 gennaio, conosciuta come Legge Lorenzin, in cui il Consiglio Nazionale dei Chimici ha assunto la denominazione di Federazione Nazionale degli Ordini dei Chimici e dei Fisici. Finalmente, dopo un impegno durato anni e anni, i fisici hanno ottenuto il riconoscimento della professione alla pari di chimici, biologi, ingegneri. Per i fisici insieme ai chimici è stata riconosciuta la professione non solo tecnica ma anche sanitaria. Si tratta di un importante traguardo raggiunto dalla Società Italiana di Fisica insieme al Consiglio Nazionale dei Chimici (CNC) e ad altre associazioni o istituzioni tra cui, in particolare, l’Associazione Italiana di Fisica Medica (AIFM), ma anche l’Associazione Italiana di Scienze dell’Atmosfera e Meteorologia (AISAM, un tempo Associazione Geofisica Italiana), l’Associazione Italiana di Archeometria (AIAr), l’Associazione Nazionale Professionale Esperti Qualificati in Radioprotezione (ANPEQ), la Società Chimica Italiana (SCI) e il Consiglio Universitario Nazionale (CUN). Si apre dunque una nuova era per la fisica e i suoi svariati risvolti professionali che, ce lo auguriamo, avrà effetti positivi sulle vocazioni scientifiche, sulla ricerca scientifica e sul mondo delle professioni scientifiche, grazie anche a rinnovate forme di collaborazione tra chimici e fisici.

Nel 2018 è proseguita l’azione congiunta della SIF con il CUN (Consiglio Universitario Nazionale), alcuni enti di ricerca e l’Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca (ANVUR) riguardo alla riforma dei settori concorsuali (SC) e scientifico-disciplinari (SSD) in relazione a svariati fondamentali problemi dell’area fisica, come inquadramento dei docenti, Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN), concorsi, valutazione, articolazione della didattica, costituzione di dipartimenti e collegi di dottorato, ecc.

Il 2018 ha anche dato l’avvio a una nuova campagna di reclutamento dei Soci specialmente mirata ai giovani, con alcune novità in termini di quote associative, come riportato in dettaglio sul sito web della SIF. Già nei primi mesi di quest’anno, quest’iniziativa sembrerebbe avere dato i suoi primi risultati incoraggianti. Ed è stata stabilita un’attiva forma di collaborazione tra la SIF e l’AISF (Associazione Italiana Studenti di Fisica).

Altro traguardo raggiunto è stato il Comitato Pari Opportunità (CPO) della SIF, creato nel 2017 e diventato operativo nel 2018, con una serie di interessanti iniziative. Il CPO si è già riunito a Bologna e si riunirà nuovamente a Varenna nel mese di luglio.

Nel 2018 il Giornale di Fisica e i Quaderni di Storia della Fisica si rinnovano, come già annunciato su SIF Prima Pagina, e anche il sito web della SIF ha assunto un nuovo aspetto e nuove potenzialità. Gli accessi alla newsletter e al sito sono in costante aumento.

Sia al nostro 104° Congresso Nazionale, che si svolgerà quest’anno presso l’Università della Calabria, sia al livello editoriale, la SIF intende celebrare alcune ricorrenze significative, come gli 80 anni dalla scomparsa di Ettore Majorana, in particolare con la ristampa del volume “Ettore Majorana – Scientific Papers”, o come l’80° anniversario del Premio Nobel a Enrico Fermi per i suoi esperimenti romani negli anni trenta del secolo scorso, con la stampa in inglese (appena avvenuta) del volume “The Lost Notebook of Enrico Fermi”.

L’International Day of Light (IDL) 2018 sarà celebrato dalla SIF a Como, il 16 maggio, nell’ambito della quinta edizione del locale Festival della Luce. A Varenna, oltre ai tradizionali corsi della Scuola Internazionale di Fisica Enrico Fermi della SIF, non poteva inoltre mancare il simposio internazionale “Passion for Physics” che si terrà il 13-14 luglio sul tema “Highlights and Perspectives in Multi- Messenger Research”.

Infine la SIF celebrerà, presso l’Università di Ginevra il 28 settembre, la European Physical Society (EPS) che lì fu fondata nel 1968 da Gilberto Bernardini, allora Direttore della Ricerca del CERN. Questo prestigioso cinquantenario è stato già marcato dalla recentissima elezione come EPS President Elect di Petra Rudolf, dell’Università di Groningen. Dunque una donna (per la seconda volta, finalmente!) guiderà l’EPS a partire dal 2019. Alla Professoressa Rudolf i nostri migliori auguri e congratulazioni.

2018 opened with an important breakthrough, Law 3 of January 11th, known as the Lorenzin Law, in which the National Council of Chemists was renamed as National Federation of the Rolls of Chemists and Physicists. Finally, after a commitment that lasted years and years, Italian physicists have achieved recognition of their profession on par with chemists, biologists, engineers. For physicists together with chemists the profession was recognized not only in the technical/technological but also in the healthcare sector. This is an important milestone achieved by the Italian Physical Society (SIF) together with the National Council of Chemists (CNC) and other associations or institutions including, in particular, the Italian Association of Medical Physics (AIFM), but also the Italian Association of Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology (AISAM, formerly the Italian Geophysical Association), the Italian Association of Archaeometry (AIAr), the National Professional Association of Qualified Experts in Radioprotection (ANPEQ), the Italian Chemical Society (SCI) and the National University Council (CUN). Therefore a new era opens up for physics and its various professional aspects that, we hope, will have positive effects on scientific vocations, scientific research and the world of scientific professions, also thanks to renewed forms of collaboration between chemists and physicists.

In 2018 the joint action of the SIF, together with the CUN (National University Council), some research institutions and the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research System (ANVUR), was carried on regarding the reform of the so-called competition sectors (SC) and scientific-disciplinary sectors (SSD) with respect to several fundamental problems of the physics area, such as classification of teachers, National Scientific Qualification (ASN), competitions, assessment, teaching programs, constitution of departments and doctorate colleges, etc.

In 2018 a new Members’ recruitment campaign was also initiated, especially aimed at young people, with some changes in terms of membership fees, as detailed in the SIF website. Already in the first months of this year, this initiative would seem to have given its first encouraging results. And an active form of collaboration has been established between the SIF and the AISF (Italian Association of Physics Students).

Another goal achieved was the Equal Opportunities Committee (CPO) of the SIF, established in 2017 and became operational in 2018, with a series of interesting initiatives. The CPO has already met in Bologna and will meet again in Varenna in July.

In 2018 the journals Giornale di Fisica and Quaderni di Storia della Fisica are being revamped, as already announced on the newsletter SIF Prima Pagina, and the SIF website as well has taken on a new aspect and a new potential. The access statistics to the newsletter and to the site shows a steadily increasing trend.

Both at our 104th National Congress, which will take place this year at the University of Calabria, and at the publishing level, the SIF wishes to celebrate some siginificant events, such as 80 years since the disappearance of Ettore Majorana, in particular with the reprint of the volume “Ettore Majorana – Scientific Papers”, or as the 80th anniversary of the Nobel Prize to Enrico Fermi for his Roman experiments in the thirties of last century, with the publication in English (just issued) of the book “The Lost Notebook of Enrico Fermi”.

The International Day of Light (IDL) 2018 will be celebrated by the SIF in Como, on May 16th, as part of the fifth edition of the local Light Festival. In Varenna, the traditional courses of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics of the SIF will further be completed by the international symposium “Passion for Physics” which will be held on July 13th-14th and focused on “Highlights and Perspectives in Multi-Messenger Research”.

Lastly, the SIF will celebrate, at the University of Geneva on September 28th, the European Physical Society (EPS) which was founded there in 1968 by Gilberto Bernardini, then Research Director at CERN. This prestigious 50th anniversary was already marked by the very recent election as EPS President Elect of Petra Rudolf, from the University of Groningen. Thus a woman (for the second time, finally!) will lead the EPS starting from 2019. To Professor Rudolf our best wishes and congratulations.
