Cari Soci e Cari Lettori,

A new expanded edition” (SIFSpringer, 2020).

Angela Bracco
Presidente SIF

Dear SIF Members, Dear Readers,

as you may have well realized by consulting our web page and SIF Prima Pagina, the activities of SIF, carried out in compliance with the rules imposed to face the COVID-19 pandemic, have been conducted with our usual goal to be present and incisive. For your convenience, I will briefly summarize here some of the activities carried out in the last four months.

The latest news on SIF’s international connections concerns the signing of a collaboration agreement with the Indian Physics Association (IPA). In this context we have published in SIF Prima Pagina a pill written by Vandana Nanal for a special edition of their bulletin commemorating Bibha Chowdhuri (1913-1991), the first woman in India studying particle physics who did pioneering research on cosmic rays. I then asked IPA in turn to publish in their bulletin an article by Luisa Cifarelli on her book on Laura Bassi (SIF-Springer, 2020), edited together with Raffaella Simili. This article is presently under publication.

As learned society associated with the European Physical Society we participated in the last meeting of the Council in which the handover took place between the outgoing president Petra Rudolf and the President elected last year, Luc Bergé. In addition to giving due importance to the ongoing activities, including the drafting of the document “EPS Grand Challenges: Physics for Society at the Horizon 2050”, it was announced by Petra Rudolf that Luisa Cifarelli was awarded with the Gero Thomas 2021 medal. She was awarded for her very significant commitment to research and scientific organizations, and to EPS in particular, for which she also created the “EPS Historic Sites” program.

As for the national events to which SIF has given its contribution, I would like to mention four of them, for two of which (the first two) the SIF commitment was more consistent.

• The SIF and the Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna sponsored a web seminar, held on April 27, for the presentation of the re-edition, entirely in English, of the book “Scientific papers of Ettore Majorana. A new expanded edition” (SIF-Springer, 2020). This event, that I had the pleasure to introduce, was particularly interesting because the speakers, Antonino Zichichi, Luciano Maiani, Giorgio Benedek and Nadia Robotti, underlined very well the innovation and depth of Majorana’s research which marked a turning point and laid the foundations for the understanding of many physical phenomena. The latter range from atomic physics, to the nature of neutrinos, to the introduction of new particles linked to concepts used in condensed matter and which are at the basis of quantum computers. Let me remind that the book includes new interesting articles by A. Zichichi, A. Bettini, G. Benedek, F. Guerra and N. Robotti on the today scientific impact of Majorana.

• The SIF, the Accademia delle Scienze dell’Istituto di Bologna, the AISF and the University of Bologna sponsored a series of online seminars, collected under the title “On the shoulders of Giants” aimed in particular at students, on topics of current interest, all given by distinguished colleagues who attracted considerable attention.

• It was a great pleasure for me to be at the Teatro Sociale di Como on the evening of May 15 to welcome, on behalf of the SIF, the participants in the opening event of the Festival della Luce - Lake Como 2021 - VIII edition, promoted and organized by the Alessandro Volta Foundation (May 15-23, at the turn of May 16, the International Day of Light). The title of this year’s edition was “Love that moves the Sun and other stars”.

• My participation, with a welcome greeting, in the closing ceremony of the Asimov Prize for Scientific Publishing allowed me, in addition to congratulating the organizers and participants, to inform that SIF intends to offer free association to the students who have obtained high marks for the writing of reviews of some selected scientific books. This edition of the Asimov Prize was very successful and involved the participation of over 10000 students.

Our contribution to events organized by other associations with which we already have solid collaborative ties was also effective. In fact, this year the SIF has selected the winners of awards, given in its name, for physics projects in high schools that were presented within the event organized by the FAST federation (to which we are associated) and which deals with many scientific disciplines. Physics projects ranked high.

The SIF sponsored the docufilm “Einstein speaks Italian” broadcast by Rai Storia last May and is committed to publishing with Springer a revised edition written in English of the book edited by Sandra Linguerri and Raffaella Simili from which the docufilm was taken.

Also this year we have formed a working group to prepare the SIF Congress for 2021 on a digital platform that will have improvements as compared to last year. The Committee for Equal Opportunities (CPO), chaired by Sara Pirrone, prepared photos and short biographies of female scientists to be associated with each virtual classroom who had all excelled in the research field of the corresponding section.

As for the submission of abstracts for communications, we are pleased to note that there has been an increase of about 15% compared to 2020, year in which there had already been a 20% increase. The idea of producing also this year two further issues of Il Nuovo Cimento C for selected communications, proved to be successful and in particular attracted young physicists. The cancellation of many conferences has significantly diminished the possibility of giving talks and therefore the SIF congress seems to be appreciated also to cover this deficit.

Finally, I want to emphasize that we were committed to follow the projects and initiatives put in place within the PNRR concerning Research and University and we will continue to monitor the developments that will be crucial in the coming months. We have changed the way we work to adapt to current conditions but thanks to the effort and constant commitment of our staff and of all our collaborators we are carrying out most of our activities. Thus, even if I am repetitive, I would like to express my sincere thanks to them knowing that this is also the intention of our readers.
