Cari Soci, Cari Lettori,
Sono stati molti gli eventi a cui ho partecipato per rappresentare la SIF nel periodo aprile-giugno 2023. E soprattutto non poteva mancare l’organizzazione da parte nostra di Passion for Physics 2023, un simposio internazionale per celebrare i 70 anni della Scuola Internazionale di Fisica “Enrico Fermi” di Varenna sul lago di Como. È stato un grande onore ricevere per questa celebrazione una medaglia del Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella.
Nel seguito desidero illustrare in breve perché è stato un piacere per me essere stata presente a rappresentare la SIF ad alcuni di questi eventi e ritengo naturale soffermarmi con qualche dettaglio in più sulla celebrazione dei 70 anni della Scuola di Varenna.
Un tratto che ha caratterizzato e tuttora caratterizza l’operato della SIF, nella sua missione di promuovere e favorire lo studio e il progresso della fisica, è il suo forte impegno per gli studenti di fisica e i giovani fisici. In quest’ambito ho dato il benvenuto a tre eventi, patrocinati dalla SIF.
• La VII edizione della CISF (Conferenza Italiana Studenti di Fisica) a Palermo. La SIF considera molto positivamente l’impegno degli studenti che in occasione di queste conferenze si scambiano idee e opinioni, e vengono a conoscenza di filoni di ricerca molto attuali e prolifici.
• Gli eventi PLANCKS a Milano organizzati dalla IAPS (International Association of Physics Students). Si tratta di un’occasione che riunisce i migliori studenti di fisica di tutto il mondo, spesso vincitori di concorsi nazionali, i quali competono in squadre per risolvere problemi in numerose discipline della fisica.
• L’EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting 2023 a Napoli, ospitato da PONYS (Physics and Optics Naples Young Students) con circa 100 partecipanti. Il programma ha compreso anche un’interessante tavola rotonda sul tema delle pubblicazioni scientifiche e il loro collegamento con il mondo attuale.
Per quanto riguarda il nostro impegno per la “Professione Fisico” – lasciatemi ricordare che già nel 2007 la SIF aveva fatto partire la proposta di istituire l’Ordine Professionale dei Fisici – ho portato il sostegno della SIF in occasione di due eventi.
• Il Congresso 2023 di Ottica e Optometria all’Università di Milano-Bicocca. Ho ricordato il sostegno della SIF a questa professione e che anche quest’anno ci sarà una sessione all’interno del Congresso SIF a Salerno sui lavori degli ottici e optometristi a cui seguirà una speciale pubblicazione a cura della SIF.
• Il Congresso Nazionale di Fisica Medica a Firenze. Ho partecipato alla tavola rotonda sulle Scuole di Specializzazione e le Lauree Abilitanti per discutere lo stato dell’arte e prossimi sviluppi in quest’ambito, in particolare per la definizione delle competenze della professione del fisico in ambito sanitario.
Non mi è mancata l’occasione di fare un po’ di divulgazione. Infatti, il 16 maggio, in occasione della Giornata Internazionale della Luce, ho tenuto una breve relazione al Teatro Sociale di Como all’evento “Sotto il Vulcano, natura, luce e energia e le sfide della scienza” all’interno del Festival della Luce di Como. Ho evidenziato il ruolo della fisica negli sviluppi di vulcanologia.
La giornata celebrativa dei 70 anni della Scuola di Fisica “Enrico Fermi” di Varenna ha avuto molto successo. Nei loro saluti di benvenuto, le autorità locali hanno sottolineato l’importanza di questa Scuola anche sul territorio. È stato evidenziato che la posizione unica della villa Monastero sul lago, la bellezza del luogo e del giardino favoriscono la meditazione e la concentrazione, elementi essenziali per una scuola di fisica.
La tavola rotonda con i rappresentanti degli enti INFN, CNR, INGV e INRiM ha messo in luce quanto i corsi della Scuola Internazionale di Varenna abbiano sempre trattato ad alto livello le tematiche che sono state le priorità scientifiche di questi enti e abbiano contribuito a rendere sempre più attuale la ricerca nei vari campi. Non sono poi mancati i ricordi legati ai momenti di convivialità tra docenti e studenti che questa scuola ha sempre favorito anche con belle escursioni nei dintorni.
Il programma dei seminari durante la giornata ha voluto proprio riflettere l’equa distribuzione di tematiche scientifiche trattate negli anni nei vari corsi della Scuola. Abbiamo avuto tra i relatori il Premio Nobel Serge Haroche che ci ha affascinato con la sua presentazione in cui ha anche espresso alcune sue considerazioni sulle direzioni future della fisica.
Tutti i relatori hanno fatto alcune osservazioni di carattere storico molto interessanti legate alla Scuola di Varenna e hanno evidenziato come questi corsi abbiano avuto un impatto sulla ricerca dei giorni nostri e sulla definizione dei programmi per i prossimi anni.
È possibile seguire tutti i seminari, dei quali non mi è possibile riportare qui i contenuti, su You Tube, in quanto la giornata è stata trasmessa in diretta e interamente registrata.
Nelle mie considerazioni introduttive ho riportato un messaggio del Presidente Onorario decano della SIF Renato Angelo Ricci che aveva partecipato a questo tipo di eventi celebrativi a partire dal trentennale della Scuola. Dal suo messaggio voglio riprendere la sua affermazione che questo ramo di Lecco del Lario dove si trova Varenna è chiamato il lago dei fisici. Considero questo molto interessante, essendo nata a Lecco, la città manzoniana, ma forse anche il grande scrittore e poeta Alessandro Manzoni, di cui quest’anno si celebrano i 150 anni dalla sua morte, potrebbe apprezzare questa affermazione!

Dear Members, Dear Readers,
I participated in many events to represent the SIF in the April-June 2023 period. Furthermore, we could not miss the opportunity to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi” in Varenna on Lake Como, by organizing the international symposium Passion for Physics 2023. It was a great honor to receive a medal from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella for this celebration.
In the following I would like to briefly illustrate why it was a pleasure for me to represent the SIF at some of the events I participated in and I will also spend a few more words on the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Varenna School.
A trait that has characterized and still characterizes the work of the SIF, in its mission to promote and encourage the study and progress of physics, is its strong commitment to physics students and young physicists. In this context, I welcomed three events sponsored by the SIF:
• The VII edition of the CISF (Italian Conference of Physics Students) in Palermo. SIF considers very positively the commitment of the students who, during these conferences, exchange ideas and opinions, and get to know current and prolific research lines.
• The PLANCKS events in Milan organized by the IAPS (International Association of Physics Students). They represent an occasion to bring together the best physics students from all over the world, often winners of national competitions, who compete in teams to solve problems in numerous physics disciplines.
• The EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting 2023 in Naples, hosted by PONYS (Physics and Optics Naples Young Students) with about 100 participants. The program also included an interesting round table on the topic of scientific publications and their connection with today’s world.
Concerning our commitment with the “Physics Profession” – let me recall here that the SIF already in 2007 had launched the proposal to set up the Professional Order of Physicists – I brought the support of the SIF on the occasion of two events.
• The 2023 Congress of Optics and Optometry at the University of Milano- Bicocca. I have reinforced SIF’s support for this profession and announced that again this year there will be a session within the SIF Congress in Salerno on the work of opticians and optometrists, which will be followed by a special SIF publication.
• The National Congress of Medical Physics in Florence. I have attended the round table on Specialization Schools and Qualifying Degrees to discuss the state of the art and upcoming developments in this area, in particular for the definition of the skills of the physicist profession in the healthcare field.
I did not miss the opportunity to do some physics dissemination. In fact, on May 16th, on the occasion of the International Day of Light, I gave a brief report at the Teatro Sociale in Como for the event “Under the Volcano, nature, light and energy and the challenges of science” within the Como Festival of Light. I have highlighted the role of physics in the development of volcanology.
The day celebrating the 70th anniversary of the International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi” was a success. We were welcomed by the local authorities who stressed the importance of this School also for the territory. It has been highlighted that the unique position of the Villa Monastero on the lake, the beauty of the place and of the garden favor meditation and concentration, which are essential elements for any physics school. The round table with the representatives of the INFN, CNR, INGV and INRiM research institutions highlighted how the courses of the Varenna School have always treated at a high level issues that have been the scientific priorities of these institutions and how the courses have contributed in keeping at the forefront the research in the various fields. Memories were recalled of cherished moments between teachers and students that this School has always encouraged, especially with excursions in the beautiful surrounding areas.
The program of seminars during the day reflected well the equal distribution of scientific topics covered in the School courses throughout the years. Among the speakers a special mention goes to Nobel Prize Winner Serge Haroche who fascinated us with his presentation in which he also expressed some of his considerations on the future directions of physics.
All the speakers made some very interesting historical remarks related to the Varenna School and highlighted how these courses have had an impact on present research and on the definition of programs for the coming years.

In my introductory remarks I reported a message from Renato Angelo Ricci, doyen of SIF Honorary Presidents, who had participated in this type of celebrative events since the thirtieth anniversary of the School. From his message I wish to highlight his statement that this branch of Lecco of Lario where Varenna is located is called the lake of physicists. I consider this very interesting, as I was born in Lecco, the Manzonian town, and I believe that the great writer and poet Alessandro Manzoni, whose 150th anniversary of his death is being celebrated this year, could appreciate this statement!
