32, anno 2016, no. 3-4).

Buon 2017!

The 2016 elections of the Italian Physical Society via electronic voting procedure were held regularly and without a hitch from a technical standpoint. Almost all voting Members have expressed their vote remotely from 18 August until 28 September, prior to the opening, as per the Bylaws, of the polling station at the seat of the 102nd National Congress of Padua. The polling station has been open for two days (28-30 September) but practically unused. Except in one case, there were no options to vote by proxy.

The outcome of the vote (reported on page 75) was received online by the Electoral Commission within a few minutes after the closure of the polling station on 30 September. In total 40% of the Members entitled have voted. A higher percentage would have been preferable but this is nevertheless a percentage exceeding those usually obtained in other Societies, e.g. the IO P (Institute of Physics) or APS (American Physical Society), in similar elections.

Besides the President, six out of seven SIF Councillors have been re-elected for the 2017-2019 triennium. So, for the SIF, this election took place in a spirit of continuity. The new Council will make its debut in January 2017, the year when we will celebrate the 120th anniversary of the SIF.

I am very grateful and very honoured to have been reappointed as President of the Society. In the next three years I will try to implement – together with all the Members of the Council of Presidency and with their help – the agenda outlined in my Editorial appeared in the previous issue of Il Nuovo Saggiatore (vol. 32, anno 2016, no. 3-4).

In October this year the election of the President of the European Physical Society by the EPS Council took place as well. The Council is composed of about 80 delegates who were able to go personally to Mulhouse on 14 October at the EPS headquarters to participate in the Extraordinary Council Meeting, convened specially for the occasion, or, for the first time, connect and vote via videoconference. Our German colleague Rudiger Voss turned out to be elected. He will take over the presidency of the EPS next April 2017, replacing the Swiss Christophe Rossel. To the new President Elect of the EPS the best wishes of the SIF.

I will conclude with my warmest wishes to the newly elected Councillors and my special thanks to the outgoing Councillor, Massimo Inguscio, in the hope that he will continue to promote the activities of the SIF, in particular regarding the Varenna School, but not only.

To all SIF Members who have newly granted us with their support and trust, our deepest thanks.

Have a nice 2017!
