La SIF celebra quest’anno il 120° anniversario della sua fondazione, avvenuta a Roma nel 1897 nella famosa palazzina di via Panisperna. Primo evento celebrativo, per mettere in risalto questo importante traguardo della sua storia, è stato il Simposio Internazionale "Passion for Physics" che ha avuto luogo sabato 24 giugno a Varenna, sul Lago di Como, nella splendida cornice di Villa Monastero.

Villa Monastero ospita dal 1953 i corsi della Scuola internazionale post universitaria di eccellenza della SIF , intitolata a uno dei più grandi fisici di tutti i tempi, Enrico Fermi. La Villa, la sua storia e le bellezze naturali che la circondano costituiscono un potente ingrediente per la riuscita dei corsi e degli eventi che vi sono organizzati. Per questo motivo la SIF ha scelto un luogo così magico per festeggiare. Un dettagliato rendiconto del Simposio è pubblicato nella rubrica Il Nostro Mondo di questo numero de Il Nuovo Saggiatore (p. 60-63).

Negli ultimi 120 anni, tante, anzi tantissime sono state e sono le attività e le iniziative della SIF da raccontare, i suoi premi, le sue pubblicazioni, i suoi congressi. Una bella sintesi è stata di recente pubblicata nel fascicolo (scaricabile dal sito web della SIF ) che vi invito a leggere: "Società Italiana di Fisica – 120 anni e oltre / Italian Physical Society – 120 years and beyond".

Varenna quest’anno ha vissuto un’alta concentrazione di eventi dal 24 giugno al 26 luglio. Infatti, tornando alla nostra beneamata International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi”, tre corsi hanno seguito il Simposio “Passion for Physics”. Ecco l’elenco dei titoli e dei direttori cui vanno i miei sinceri ringraziamenti per il successo ottenuto: “Physics of and Science with X-Ray Free Electron Lasers” (199° Corso, 26 giugno-1° luglio, Direttori: C. Pellegrini, J. Hastings), “Gravitational Waves and Cosmology” (200° Corso, 3-12 luglio, Direttori: E. Coccia, N. Vittorio, J. Silk), “Nuclear Physics with Stable and Radioactive Ion Beams” (201° Corso, 14-19 luglio, Direttori F. Gramegna, P. Van Duppen, A. Vitturi). A seguire un corso della Joint EPS-SIF International School on Energy, su “Advances in Basic Energy Issues” (4° Corso, 21-26 luglio, Direttori: L. Cifarelli, F. Wagner).

Va sottolineato che in occasione del suo 120° anniversario la SIF ha eccezionalmente bandito, per ogni corso, un elevato numero di borse per studenti allo scopo di spronare la partecipazione dei giovani.

In tema di giovani, un’apposita “Task Force” è stata recentemente istituita dalla SIF con il compito di proporre azioni atte a stimolare e rendere più efficace il passaggio dallo stato di Socio Invited (riservato agli studenti magistrali che vengono associati alla SIF a titolo gratuito per 2 anni) a quello di Socio Junior (riservato ai soci paganti con meno di 30 anni). Per esempio, per il 2018, si sta pensando per i giovani a una revisione delle quote associative, a una ridefinizione di quelle per la partecipazione a scuole e conferenze, all’istituzione di travel grants, ecc. Ma meglio non anticipare troppo ...

Sul fronte editoriale, segnalo il buon andamento della rivista EPJ Plus che è in continua crescita in termini di numero di lavori e di impact factor. Segnalo anche il previsto rilancio del Giornale di Fisica, con i suoi Quaderni di Storia della Fisica, che a partire dal 2018 sarà in formato unicamente elettronico, con alcuni articoli fruibili in open access.

È anche in corso la traduzione in inglese del volume “Enrico Fermi e il Quaderno Ritrovato” (di F. Guerra e N. Robotti), che verrà presentato alla fine dell’anno negli Stati Uniti, in occasione delle celebrazioni del 75° anniversario dell’accensione della prima pila nucleare CP-1. E bollono in pentola nuove idee per la pubblicazione di volumi in co-edizione SIF-Springer.

Per finire, veniamo al 103° Congresso Nazionale della SIF che quest’anno si svolge a Trento, dall’11 al 15 settembre. Il Congresso riunisce tradizionalmente circa 600 fisici italiani e rappresenta il momento d’incontro e di riflessione di una grande e omogenea comunità scientifica che esprime diversi interessi culturali e di ricerca. Il Congresso, articolato in sessioni plenarie e parallele, tocca i principali ambiti delle sue ormai consuete sette sezioni tematiche. Un attivissimo Comitato Organizzatore Locale ha inoltre messo a punto un programma sociale e scientifico parallelo, con l’accattivante titolo di “FisiCittà – La fisica come non l’avete mai vista”, ricco di eventi che mirano ad avvicinare al massimo la cittadinanza trentina all’affascinante e, forse, poco noto mondo della fisica.

In occasione del suo 120° anniversario, non ci poteva essere migliore iniziativa per la SIF il cui scopo primario è quello di “promuovere, favorire e tutelare lo studio e il progresso della fisica in Italia e nel mondo”. Infatti, non basta fare della buona ricerca e della buona istruzione scientifica. Occorre darsi attivamente da fare per far conoscere a tutti ciò che facciamo, affinché tutti si rendano conto che sostenere con convinzione la scienza è il dovere di ogni società che voglia definirsi moderna e civile.

The SIF celebrates this year the 120th anniversary of its founding in Rome, in 1897, in the famous building of via Panisperna. The first celebration event planned to highlight this important milestone of its history has been the International Symposium “Passion for Physics” that took place on Saturday 24 June in Varenna, Lake Como, in the splendid setting of Villa Monastero.

Since 1953, Villa Monastero has been hosting the courses of the post-graduate School of excellence of the SIF , named after one of the greatest physicists of all times, Enrico Fermi. The Villa, its history and the natural beauties that surround it are a powerful ingredient for the success of the courses and events that are organized there. For this reason, the SIF has chosen such a magical place to celebrate. A detailed report of the Symposium can be found in the section Il Nostro Mondo of this issue of Il Nuovo Saggiatore (p. 60-63).

During the last 120 years, there are many, or rather very many SIF activities and initiatives to tell, which have been and are being carried out, its awards, its publications, its congresses. A good synthesis has been recently published in a booklet (downloadable from the SIF web site) that I invite you to read: “Società Italiana di Fisica – 120 anni e oltre / Italian Physical Society – 120 years and beyond”.

Varenna this year has had a high concentration of events from 24 June to 26 July. Indeed, coming back to our beloved International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi”, three courses have followed the Symposium “Passion for Physics”. Here is the list of titles and directors to whom I would like to express my sincere thanks for the success achieved: “Physics of Science and X-Ray Free Electron Lasers” (199th Course, June 26-July 1, Directors: C. It should be emphasized that on the occasion of its 120th anniversary, the SIF has exceptionally banned, for each course, a large number of student grants in order to encourage the participation of young people.

With regard to young people, a special “Task Force” has been recently set up by the SIF with the assignment of proposing actions to stimulate and make more effective the transition from the status of Invited Member (reserved for MD students who benefit from free association to the SIF for 2 years) to Junior Member (reserved for paying members under 30). For instance, in 2018, one could think of reviewing membership fees, of redefining those for participation in schools and conferences, of establishing travel grants, etc. But it’s better not to say too much in advance ...

On the publishing front, let me first report the good performance of the EPJ Plus journal, which is continuously growing in terms of number of articles and impact factor. I would also like to signal the planned revival of Giornale di Fisica, with its Quaderni di Storia della Fisica, which will appear in electronic format only, starting from 2018, with a selection of articles in open access.

Also the English translation of the volume “Enrico Fermi e il Quaderno Ritrovato” (by F. Guerra and N. Robotti) is going on. It will be presented at the end of the year in the United States, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the ignition of the first nuclear pile CP-1. And new ideas are cooking for the production of SIF -Springer co-published volumes.

Finally, let’s get to the 103rd National Congress of the SIF that takes place this year in Trento, from 11 to 15 September. The Congress traditionally brings together about 600 Italian physicists and represents the time to meet and reflect for a large and homogeneous scientific community that expresses various cultural and research interests. The Congress, articulated in plenary and parallel sessions, touches the main areas of its now-familiar seven topical sections. An extremely active Local Organizing Committee has also put in place a parallel social and scientific programme, with the captivating title of “FisiCittà – Physics as you have never seen it”, rich in events that aim to maximize the involvement of the citizens of Trento in the fascinating and, perhaps, little-known world of physics.

On the occasion of its 120th anniversary, there could be no better initiative for the SIF, whose main purpose is to “promote, encourage and safeguard the study and progress of physics in Italy and in the world”. In fact, it is not enough to do good research and good scientific education. We need to be proactively engaged in making everyone aware of what we do, so that everyone can realize that to firmly support science is the duty of any society that wishes to be modern and civil.
